Since his passing on June 6, 2019, the estate of Dr. John has released archival and live recordings encompassing studio albums, festival performances, and early singles, keeping his enduring work in ongoing circulation.

Among these releases is Things Happen That Way (2022), his final studio album, released via Rounder Records and featuring guest appearances from Lukas Nelson and Promise of the Real, Willie Nelson, and Aaron Neville. The record earned a Grammy nomination in the Americana category and drew renewed attention to his late-period songwriting and interpretive range.

Subsequent releases span live performance and archival recordings: The Montreux Years 1986–2012 (2023) gathered performances from his long history at the Montreux Jazz Festival. Solo Piano Live in New Orleans 1984 (2023) captured an intimate solo set recorded during the Jazz Fest era, highlighting his New Orleans repertoire and piano-driven arrangements. In 2024, Gris-Gris Gumbo Ya Ya: Singles 1968–1974 compiled his early ATCO-era singles, covering the formative years of his “Night Tripper” persona through his transition into broader commercial success.

More recently, Live at Montreux 1986 (2024) revisited a full solo performance from his festival appearances, while Live at the Village Gate (2025) presented a 1988 full-band recording showcasing him at a particularly focused live peak. In 2026, Live at Rockpalast 1999 extended that archival arc further, documenting a late-career European performance that underscored the durability of his sound, formed in the cultural churn of New Orleans.

Across these releases, the estate has framed the work not as retrospective curation alone, but as an ongoing portrait of an artist whose catalog moves between studio craft and live improvisation, blues tradition, and theatrical invention.

“I’m happy that these albums can bring back memories of when the listener first put Dr. John records on their turntable – and when they saw Dad perform live, if they were lucky enough to be in that number,” his daughter and Estate Executrix Karla R. Pratt says. “On this seventh anniversary of his passing, thank you to all the fans, friends and family for keeping Dad’s music alive in their hearts through the years.”
