B.B. King is receiving a much deserved film. John Brewer, the British director who has completed a number of music related documentaries, is working on the production, slated to be released in May of 2012.

Brewer recently sat down with Guitarist Magazine to discuss the project. “It was an absolute privilege to be asked to make this film,” says the director. “It’s B.B. King’s Life!”

The film is currently in production, and Brewer is working hard to accurately depict the fascinating life of the Blues legend. He had this to say to the December issue of Guitarist Magazine:

“One aspect tops all others. There’s this little boy who loved going to school, didn’t so much love going to church, but so respected his mother and did what his mother told him. And suddenly she was fading; he saw his mother die, that then led to how he relied upon his grandmother and worked the land, who was also fading in years, so they could eat. And then she died – as a nine or 10-year old; his life had been crushed. He managed to become a sharecropper, which is somebody who earns $2.50 a month to pay for his rent and his food. I have seen the ledgers that still exist where he cleared his debt and his grandmother’s debt, before his father came to collect him. That man survived and became The King of the Blues. To do what he has done is remarkable.”

King has been popular in the news lately, with a nationally covered White House appearance, and last year’s announcement of a biopic feature film on the Blues legend, starring Wendell Pierce, who plays a trombonist on HBO’s must-see hit series Tremé, playing the King of the Blues.

Coupled with the coverage of B.B. King in Guitarist, the magazine has also released a special edition Fanpack that includes a 132 page collector’s edition Magazine with the King on the cover, as well as an exclusive Documentary to complement the upcoming biographic film by Brewer.

If you want to win a free copy of the B.B. King Fanpack, Guitarist Magazine and American Blues Scene are giving away a grand prize that consists of not only the Fanpack, but a one year’s subscription to Guitarist, the premiere magazine for Guitar and Music lovers.
