Award-winning blues artist Erin Harpe unveils the first single from her upcoming album, Let the Mermaids Flirt With Me: A Tribute to Mississippi John Hurt — set to arrive October 24th on her own Erin Harpe Music label, in partnership with the VizzTone Label Group.
With “Candy Man,” Harpe offers an imaginative and upbeat tribute to one of her greatest influences, the legendary Mississippi John Hurt. Her signature snappy fingerpicking and nuanced vocals are perfectly matched by Jim Countryman’s syncopated ukulele bass line, adding a rhythmic bounce and buoyant chemistry.
The original “Candy Man” was recorded by Mississippi John Hurt in 1928 and found renewed popularity during the 1960s folk revival. Known for its cheeky double-entendres, gentle groove, and distinctive rhythmic picking, the song has been covered by artists such as Taj Mahal and the Grateful Dead. Erin Harpe and Jim Countryman’s version brings vintage charm and modern flair, holding its own alongside these celebrated interpretations.
The album marks Harpe’s fifth release with VizzTone and follows her award-winning acoustic album Meet Me in the Middle, which took home Album of the Year honors from the New England Music Awards. Taking the producer’s helm once again, Harpe reimagines these classic songs with fresh creativity and deep respect, making their enduring spirit feel immediate and alive. “Candy Man” in particular is a tribute that rings true, capturing the warmth, wit, and intricate rhythms of Mississippi John Hurt, all through Erin’s own vibrant lens.
