Gibson Custom has announced the release of the Mick Ronson 1968 Les Paul Custom Collector’s Edition, a faithful recreation of the iconic guitar played by the late English guitarist during David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust era. Only 100 guitars will be available worldwide, making this a rare opportunity for collectors and musicians alike.

Ronson stripped the ebony finish from his 1968 Les Paul, giving it an unmistakable look. Combined with wah pedals, fuzz, and echo, its tone helped define the glam rock sound of the early ’70s.

This Collector’s Edition faithfully replicates the original with:

  • Mahogany body with plain maple cap
  • ’68 Medium C-profile mahogany neck and ebony fretboard with mother-of-pearl block inlays
  • Aged gold hardware, ABR-1 bridge, Grover tuners, and worn Stop Bar tailpiece
  • Vintage-style unpotted ’68 Custom humbuckers, CTS 500k pots, and Black Beauty capacitors
  • Murphy Lab aging techniques capturing the stripped top, wear patterns, and road-worn character

Each guitar ships with a custom case, replica strap, and Certificate of Authenticity.

While best known for his work with David Bowie on The Man Who Sold the World, Hunky Dory, Ziggy Stardust, and Aladdin Sane, Ronson’s influence extended far beyond Bowie. He co-produced and arranged Lou Reed’s Transformer, including the lush piano and string arrangements on “Perfect Day,” and worked with artists like Ian Hunter, Pure Prairie League, Ellen Foley, Roger McGuinn, and more.

Watch interviews with Ronson’s family, Gary Kemp, and Woody Woodmansey reflecting on his enduring legacy.
