“Love at a Glance” finds Sammy Brue working in close conversation with the late Justin Townes Earle, turning Earle’s unpublished writings into a meditation on instant connection. The song marks the third single from The Journals, a passion project and tribute to Brue’s mentor built from never-before-recorded material drawn from Earle’s journals and entrusted to Brue by Justin’s widow.
Across the album, Brue approaches the material with care and clarity: some songs are shaped directly from Earle’s lyric sheets, others emerge as co-writes or compositions assembled from compilations of Earle’s ideas, while one track, “For Justin,” was written entirely by Brue.
Brue says of “Love at A Glance:” “This is a lyric sheet of Justin’s I found. When I uncovered these lyrics, I knew I had to write a song with it, for I am a sucker for love at first sight. I used very soft chords to complement the very excited and youthful, flirty Justin energy.”
Sammy Brue has been writing songs since the age of 10, first honing his instincts busking on the sidewalks during the Sundance Film Festival, where his performances drew the attention of actors, musicians, and the media alike. Among the earliest and most meaningful champions of Brue’s talent was fellow songwriter Justin Townes Earle, who invited him to open a show after meeting Sammy and his father at a tour stop. Their connection grew into a close friendship and songwriting mentorship, with Earle later featuring him on the cover of his 2014 album Single Mothers and inviting him on the road.
Brue has also opened and toured with Sierra Ferrell, Billy Strings, Marcus King Band, Lucinda Williams, John Moreland, Margo Price, Lindsey Buckingham, Mike Campbell, and Hayes Carll and will be hitting the road in March and April.
