Hailing from the streets of New York City’s East Village, bassist Dean Zucchero cut his teeth in the bustling, industry-driven Manhattan music scene where songwriting and studio recording chops have long since been revered and rewarded. Currently based in New Orleans, Zucchero will release his new album, Electric Church for the Spiritually Misguided, April 28th.

Zucchero left NYC for a nine-year stint Europe, touring with NY blues gunners The HEALERS!, featuring Thomas Buck-Nasty and Italy’s premier pop-jazz group Sugarpie & The Candymen, Zucchero returned to the States and set up shop in New Orleans where he reconnected with the Crescent City and found himself playing with the legendary Cyril Neville (The Meters and Neville Brothers), Little Freddie King, Johnny Sansone, Bruce “Sunpie” Barnes, Mason Ruffner, Mama’s Boys, and Ghalia Volt.

Premiering exclusively is “Big Boss Boy,” a title play-off of the 1960 Jimmy Reed number “Big Boss Man.” A glorious merger of blues, soul, and rock and roll, Zucchero tells ABS of the song:

The lyrics ironically paint love’s double-agency at work while the music itself ushers us from early to late ’70s with vocals crooned (ala Little Milton) by Mississippi Soul-Blues legend Johnny Rawls and duel guitar tracks that solo in classic Delmark style (by the label’s very own Johnny Burgin!) and cheekily comp in the funk-disco format of ‘Chic.’ Quite an eclectic throwback here.
